These are decoys that are partly decorative in nature. The bills are fully detailed but feather details are primarily painted. There is no burning or individual feathers cut in, only feather groups indicated naturally as possible. These decoys will stand up to the intended use, and can be repainted easily. They can can be quite decorative away from the gunning scene. Feather carving, it would seem, is made to capture the prospective buyer and not the ducks sought by the gunner, The time spent to burn and carve feathers is best spent to balance and ballast the decoy to float
properly and self right.
Cow Harbor decoys are ballasted and balanced to float correctly and self right; in other words, to catch ducks, not people. A purely decorative decoy may not be reasonably able to stand up to the wear and tear of display for an extended period except under glass. They cannot be used for the intended purpose, only display; a Ferrari without an engine!
No matter how well a feather detail is done, it is not a real bird, not even a reproduction. Cow Harbow decoys make no pretense, but captures the methods, materials and art of decoy making, an American tradition.
