The decoys are designed and painted to be realistic representations of the species when floated. Accentuations of portraiture and paint patterns may affect the "in hand" appearance, but at 20 ft. the effect is total. No feather carving or fine tail overhangs are used as they affect durability in the actual intended use, which is rough.
The material used is eastern white pine laminated with marine rated glue that from personal experience will last at least 50 years.
The paints are lead free exterior rated and again, from personal experience will last at least 50 years. They can be washed with soap and water (no abrasive pads or cleaners).
The shore birds and certain species may contain pine knot heads and bills (an old Long Island custom) which are well suited to the rough intended use. The eyes are inletted and bedded with epoxy to ensure durability.
If desired, the decoys may be unballasted to allow placement on shelves as flat as possible.
All decoys are signed by the artist in permanent indelible manner and a certificate of authenticity will be issued for each decoy.
The decoys are not inventoried, but created to order. Variations from decoy to decoy will occur. However, the photos are accurate representations of the tendered product.
If a non pictured species or pose is desired, it is considered a commissioned carving, and as such consultations with the artist as to cost and feasibility are required. These carvings are not returnable.
IWCA show ratings for decoys are used for all decoys as to finish, detail, ballast, etc.. The decoys sold, if entered by the artist, could be entered in a show.
Aside from band saw, sander, and drill press, hand tools are used including drawknife, rasp, chisels, palm gouges and chip knife. Some of these tools are purchased in antique shops as they are no longer manufactured in these days of power tools.
These decoys should be family heirlooms as their durability will, I am sure, outlast the artist.
