Puffins were hunted to extinction by egg gathering, as with many other nesting seabirds. I cannot imagine anyone hunting a fish eating seabird for the table, the flavor would militate against this. They are now restocked in Northern Maine thanks to Cornell University and volunteers. This section is a tribute to their persiverance.
The inclusion of puffin and other seabird decoys is a result of these efforts to attract and restock these small seabirds to the Maine Coast.
The Puffins in winter go to sea and south in small groups (1-3) and remain at sea until breeding time when they gather in large colonies. Since they lay only one egg they were very vulnerable to egg gathering.
This scenario is typical of these seabirds.
