Aside from the vagaries of judges and show submissions, shows do serve a valuable service. Decoys are a utilitarian object, and serve a deadly purpose for their use. Decoy carvers must remember the realities of the decoy's use and carve accordingly. The design of the bird was fixed by another, and capturing the essence of the bird is the function of the decoy carver. Durability, utility and likeness of species must be considered for any decoy. With these considerations in mind, I do not believe that feather carving is needed, shows or not! Capturing the essence of the bird is sufficient for any decoy. I didn't design the bird; why copy flesh and feathers in wood and paint? Ask any duck hunter who will freeze soaking wet in quest of a duck while hunting and there lies the answer! Below are the results of recent shows. Some of the decoys are already on this website.
I do not carve for shows; I present decoys from my website as it grows, or will grow. These decoys are presented for sale, and any decorative value is a plus. When I was on Long Island, NY I often ran into my lost or stolen decoys in antique shops. While looking for collectable antiques, it was always an interesting encounter to be able to provide provenance for a particular decoy and it's real age. Below are the results of shows and ribbons awarded. The 2003 shows are the first I participated in since 1968.
2003 Maine Coast Competition (Belfast, ME)
Downeast Woodcarving and Wildlife Art Show 2003 (Portland, ME)
New England Woodcarvers Annual Competition (Bedford, MA)
